03 | Snow Angels at Midnight
Originally written on January 9, 2026 | First Snowfall in England
Sometimes, timing is everything.
That evening, Jason and I sat by the window enjoying a hot pot dinner while waiting for the snow to arrive. The weather forecast had been predicting the first snowfall of the year for several days, and we were both excited.
Living in the Midlands of England, we don’t get snow as often as some northern cities. Manchester usually sees the first snowfall before we do, and if the snowfall isn’t heavy enough, it sometimes never reaches our area at all. So every year, waiting for the first snow feels a little like waiting for a winning lottery ticket.
Not long after dinner, we finally saw snowflakes drifting past the window.
By almost midnight, everyone else in the house was asleep. Jason and I looked at each other, and without saying a word, we both knew exactly what the other was thinking.
We bundled up in our coats and quietly slipped outside.
The snowfall that night was beautiful. Under the glow of the streetlights, the snowflakes danced through the darkness, and the whole neighborhood felt peaceful and still, as if the world belonged only to us for a little while.
Jason immediately threw himself onto the ground to make a snow angel while I stood nearby laughing and taking photos. Later, we built two large snowmen at the entrance to the car park and stayed outside far longer than we should have. Our hands were freezing, but neither of us wanted to go back inside.
Looking back, I realize that some of life’s happiest memories aren’t created on expensive holidays or during extraordinary moments.
Sometimes happiness is much simpler than that.
Sometimes it is just a mother and her son, standing in the middle of a snowy midnight street, feeling as excited as little children because they finally got to see the year’s first snowfall. ❄️🌿
