Originally written on 15 May 2023 | United Kingdom
This morning, Jason said to me,
“Starting today, you don’t have to take me to school or pick me up anymore. I can walk to and from school by myself.”
🥺🥺🥺
Hearing those words caught me by surprise.
For so many years, taking him to school and picking him up had simply been part of our daily routine. One day, without even noticing, he had grown confident enough to say, “I can do it myself.”
I knew this day would come eventually, but when it actually arrived, it still tugged at my heart.
As parents, we have to learn to let go, so our children can keep growing.
Over the past two years, I’ve watched him change so much.
He learned how to make instant noodles, visit his friends on his own, and now even travel to school independently.
Our little “seedling” is slowly becoming a young tree. 🌱🌳
The only thing I’m still getting used to is…
his voice has become so deep.
My little boy has officially entered his teenage years. 😂🌻🌿
🌿 Reflection | 2026
Three years ago, I watched him walk to school alone for the very first time.
At the time, I thought I was letting go of my little boy.
Looking back now, I realise I wasn’t losing anything at all.
I was simply watching him grow.
Children often become stronger long before we are ready to admit it.
Perhaps the hardest lesson isn’t teaching them to be independent.
It’s learning, as parents, to loosen our grip a little at a time.
Because every step they take forward…
is only possible because they know we’ll always be there when they look back. ❤️
